Folger Estate Stable Historic District

historic place

The Folger Estate Stable Historic District, located in Woodside, California, in San Mateo County, features buildings constructed between 1905 and 1906. James Athearn Folger II, heir to the Folgers Coffee Company, and his wife Clara E. Folger, built these stables. The architectural firm of Schultze and Brown, with Arthur Brown Jr., designed the structures in French Baroque and Arts and Crafts styles. The three-acre district includes ten buildings, such as the main horse stable, carriage house, and blacksmith barn. The stable featured pink marble baseboards and redwood wainscoting. It was used for breeding horses. Before the Folgers, Chinese laborers built many of the stone walls on the property between 1874 and 1902. The Folger Estate Stable Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 16, 2004. Today, it operates as a public horse-boarding facility within Wunderlich Park. This site preserves an example of early 20th-century estate architecture and equestrian history in Woodside.
