Independence Hall, Woodside, California

historic place

Independence Hall in Woodside, California, is a historic place in San Mateo County. Built in 1884, the structure initially stood several hundred feet west of its current Woodside Avenue location, near what are now the elementary school's tennis courts. In 1894, it was moved to Albion Avenue, where it remained for nearly eighty years. The hall closed in 1921 due to 'rowdiness' during Prohibition. It was rededicated as Scout Hall in 1944. In 1972, the land it occupied was sold, and the building moved back to the elementary school site. Following a complete restoration, Independence Hall moved to its current home next to Town Hall, at 2955 Woodside Road, in 1991. Today, it is used for Town meetings and events. This building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, registered in 1978. It reflects the community's evolving history and its commitment to preserving its past.
