Woodside Store: A Hub of Early Woodside
historic place
The Woodside Store, a historic place in San Mateo County, stands as a tangible link to early American settlement on the San Francisco Peninsula. The current building was constructed in 1854, replacing an earlier structure that burned down. It was built by Dr. R.O. Tripp and M.A. Parkhurst, amidst sawmills and redwood groves. Dr. Tripp, a dentist, operated the store himself, also serving as the area's librarian, postmaster, and a community leader until his death in 1909. The store functioned as a general store, post office, and even Dr. Tripp's dental office, becoming a central gathering spot. In 1940, the County of San Mateo purchased the Woodside Store. It opened as a public museum on September 7, 1947. The Woodside Store was designated State Registered Landmark No. 93, with a tablet dedicated on October 16, 1969. This site is important for understanding the commercial and social life of the region's lumber industry and pioneer era.
