McGurk Cabin

historic place

The McGurk Cabin is a historic place located in Yosemite Village, Mariposa County. This one-room log cabin was likely built around 1895, possibly by Hugh Davanay. Cattleman Jack McGurk used the cabin seasonally from 1895 to 1897. He was evicted by the Army in 1897 following a land title dispute. The cabin is a simple structure, about 14 feet square, built with saddle-notched peeled lodgepole pine logs and featuring a single low door. In 1958, Sierra Club volunteers and the National Park Service stabilized the cabin. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 4, 1979. The McGurk Cabin is historically significant as one of the few structures remaining in Yosemite National Park from the pre-park era.
