Half Dome Cables and Trail
historic place
Half Dome, in Mariposa County, California, is a prominent feature of Yosemite National Park. In 1865, geologist Josiah Whitney called Half Dome "perfectly inaccessible." On October 12, 1875, Yosemite guide George Anderson made the first recorded ascent. The metal cables for hikers were installed in 1919 by the Sierra Club. These cables cover the final 400 feet of the trail. Park staff install them seasonally. The Half Dome Cable Route was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This site marks a significant historical development in mountain access.
