May Lake High Sierra Camp

historic place

The May Lake High Sierra Camp, a historic place in Yosemite's Mariposa County, was established in July 1938. This camp replaced an earlier one at Tenaya Lake. The site for May Lake was selected by Donald Tresidder and Mary Curry Tresidder of the Yosemite Park and Curry Company. Located at an elevation of 9,270 feet, the camp is designed to accommodate 36 overnight guests. It is one of Yosemite's High Sierra Camps, a system that dates back to 1916, providing rustic lodging facilities in the Sierra Nevada backcountry. The May Lake camp is accessible by a 1.2-mile uphill hike from a parking area. This camp is historically significant for its role in making Yosemite's remote high country more accessible to visitors seeking a backcountry experience.
