Falkenstein, Lewis, House
historic place
The Lewis Falkenstein House, located at 401 South Gold Street in Yreka, California, is a historic place. It was constructed in 1855. The original owner and craftsman was Lewis Falkenstein, a German immigrant and mason. This house is a rare Western example of an Andrew Jackson Downing "suburban cottage in the Italian style." The first floor was built with thick stone and mud mortar. An addition in 1873 used a gravel wall construction technique. Lewis Falkenstein sold the house in the same year it was built. By 1858, another family owned the home. This residence offers a glimpse into early Yreka's architectural history.
