Welling-Everly Horse Barn
historic place
The Welling-Everly Horse Barn, a historic place in Adair, Illinois, stands in rural McDonough County. This Stick style barn was constructed in 1882 for Dave Welling, a prominent livestock farmer. Contemporary accounts in Macomb's daily newspaper recognized its artistic beauty. The barn's architecture reflects an era when exquisite buildings were common in rural settings. Originally, the barn was part of a farm that included an Eastlake style farmhouse. That house burned down in the 1890s and was later replaced. Dave Welling sold the farm in 1892. In 1901, Jonas Everly purchased the property and shifted its focus to grain farming. The Welling-Everly Horse Barn was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 9, 1985. This site is significant for its architectural style and its connection to the agricultural history of McDonough County.
