Mercer County Jail

historic place

The Mercer County Jail, a historic place in Aledo, Illinois, is located at 309 South College Avenue. Completed in 1909, this building served as the third jail for Mercer County and its second in Aledo. The jail was designed by architect Clair F. Drury of Moline in the Tudor Revival style. Its two-story brick construction features terra cotta ornamentation, including quoin-like window surrounds. The building also has a cross-gabled roof with a large gable above the main entrance, and both its gables and dormers are parapeted. The jail served the county until a new facility was completed in 1989. It was later converted into a private business. The Mercer County Jail was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 25, 1997. This site offers insight into Mercer County's judicial and architectural past.
