Midwest Athletic Club

historic place

The Midwest Athletic Club stands at 6 North Hamlin Avenue in Chicago's West Garfield Park. This historic place was constructed between 1926 and 1928. Architects Michaelsen and Rognstad designed the thirteen-story building in an ornate Spanish Baroque Revival style. The club once featured an Olympic-size swimming pool, a gymnasium with a running track, and two ballrooms. It attracted 2,000 members in its first year. However, by 1930, the club faced bankruptcy and was converted into a hotel, then later an apartment building. The Midwest Athletic Club was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 18, 1984. It underwent restoration and revitalization between 1995 and 1996. Today, the building is known as the Midwest Apartments. This site reflects Chicago's architectural and social history from the 1920s.
