Page Brothers Building

historic place

The Page Brothers Building, a historic place in Chicago, Illinois, was erected in 1872 in Cook County. Located at 177-91 North State Street, this commercial structure is notable for its north facade, which faces Lake Street and features Chicago's last remaining cast-iron front. This architectural method was a common construction technique in the city before the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. The original five-story building was designed by architect John Mills Van Osdel. Following the fire, the building's construction in 1872 exemplified the city's recovery. In 1902, the west facade, facing State Street, underwent a remodel, and an additional floor was added. This work, by architects Hill and Woltersdorf, reflected the reorientation of commercial activity from Lake Street to State Street. The Page Brothers Building was designated a Chicago Landmark on January 28, 1983. It stands as an example of early metal-frame construction technology and Chicago's post-fire architectural development.
