St. Luke's Hospital Complex
historic place
The St. Luke's Hospital Complex in Chicago, Illinois, is a historic site. Reverend Clinton E. Locke of Grace Episcopal Church founded St. Luke's Hospital in 1864. It began as a small facility, eventually moving to the Indiana Avenue site. The complex grew, adding structures like the George Smith Memorial Building, completed in 1908, and the nineteen-story Main Building from 1925. St. Luke's Hospital merged with Presbyterian Hospital in 1956, and later with Rush Medical College, eventually becoming Rush University Medical Center. The St. Luke's Hospital Complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, some of these Gothic Revival style buildings are residential. This complex reflects Chicago's evolving healthcare history.
