Smith--Ripley House

historic place

The Smith--Ripley House in Adams, Jefferson County, New York, was built in 1854. This two-story Italianate style house was constructed for Philander Smith, a local businessman. The property includes a carriage house, also dating to 1854. The house saw additions in 1883 and 1967. Over its history, it was associated with several prominent families, including the Ripley family. Vemelia Ripley purchased the house in 1884. In May 2003, Marian Steele donated the property to the Historical Association of South Jefferson. After renovations, it opened as the Ripley House Museum in August 2004. The Smith--Ripley House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. Today, it serves as a museum and a local history research center. This site preserves a significant example of mid-19th century Italianate architecture and the history of Adams.
