Avenue U Station (Dual System BRT)
historic place
The Avenue U Station, situated in Brooklyn's Kings County, holds a place in the history of the city's rapid transit expansion. An initial surface station opened around 1902. The current elevated station, which serves travelers today, began operation around 1908. This station became an integral part of the larger 'Dual System' expansion. The Brooklyn Rapid Transit, or BRT, signed the Dual Contracts in 1913, leading to significant development of new subway and rapid transit lines. On August 1, 1920, the Brighton Line, serving this station, was connected to the Broadway subway in Manhattan through a new tunnel under Flatbush Avenue. This integration allowed subway trains from Manhattan to serve Brighton Line stations, sharing the line to Coney Island. The Avenue U Station represents a vital link in Brooklyn's transportation history, reflecting the growth of the borough's rapid transit network in the early 20th century.
