Beverley Road Subway Station (BRT pre-Dual System)

historic place

The Beverley Road Subway Station, located in Brooklyn, Kings County, is a historic place. Its original station opened around 1900 to serve the developing Prospect Park South community. The Brighton Line, where this station is located, was acquired by the Brooklyn Rapid Transit, or BRT. Between 1905 and 1908, the BRT upgraded the line, establishing the open-cut design. The current station house and below-grade platforms were completed in late 1907. This construction predates the Dual Contracts era, which brought major subway expansion starting around 1913. A significant change occurred on August 1, 1920, when a tunnel connected the Brighton Line to the Broadway subway in Manhattan. The station's platforms were lengthened in 1964 and 1965. Beverley Road Subway Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 17, 2004. It exemplifies early BRT infrastructure that supported Brooklyn's neighborhood growth before the Dual Contracts.
