Christ Evangelical English Lutheran Church

historic place

The Christ Evangelical English Lutheran Church is located in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. This historic place was constructed between 1898 and 1899. The architectural firm of Dodge and Morrison designed the building in the Romanesque Revival style. Its exterior features cream-colored brick with beige brick and terra cotta trim, along with limestone accents. Inside, the church includes stained glass windows from the studio of Franz Meyer, Munich. The congregation was founded in 1895, primarily for second and third-generation German immigrants. It played a role in the trend toward English-speaking services within Lutheran churches of the era. Charles A. Schieren, a German immigrant and former mayor of Brooklyn, provided support for its establishment. The church quickly became a large and prosperous congregation. Today, the building houses the Rugged Cross Baptist Church. It is recognized for its architectural significance and its representation of religious and social history in Brooklyn.
