Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedeck
historic place
Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedeck, located in Brooklyn's Kensington neighborhood, is recognized as a historic place in Kings County, New York. The congregation was established in 1926. The building at 109 Clara Street was constructed or significantly altered between 1928 and 1932. Architect Benjamin Goldberg oversaw this work. This site is historically significant as an early 20th-century 'tenement synagogue' that has survived in Brooklyn. It is also architecturally notable as an intact example of a vernacular synagogue. The design adapted the narrow 'tenement synagogue' type, initially developed on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, to a wider lot in a developing Brooklyn neighborhood. Congregation Chevra Linath Hazedeck has served the Orthodox Jewish community continuously since its early days. It remains a distinctive architectural, cultural, and religious landmark for the Yiddish-speaking Eastern European Jewish community of Brooklyn and New York City.
