Congregation Tifereth Israel

historic place

Congregation Tifereth Israel, a historic place in Kings County, Brooklyn, New York, was established in 1907. For its first ten years, the congregation worshipped in two adjoining row houses. By 1925, a larger space was needed, and the current synagogue building was constructed. Architect Allen A. Blaustein designed the building in an eclectic style, featuring Romanesque and Baroque elements. It includes bold blind arches, a domed skylight, and rose windows with Star of David motifs. This structure is listed on the National Register and New York State Register of Historic Places. The congregation, initially Orthodox, evolved into an egalitarian Conservative congregation. This site reflects the expansion of Jewish life in Brooklyn during the 1920s.
