Fourth Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church

historic place

The Fourth Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, located in Brooklyn's Kings County, is a historic place. This Romanesque-style building was constructed in 1894. It features red brick and gray sandstone. Ecclesiastical architect George W. Kramer designed the structure. The church, found at 4616 Fourth Avenue, was built with an Akron Combination Church design. This allowed for flexible seating arrangements, combining a sanctuary and Sunday school with a removable partition. Because of this design, the building was often used for non-church events. Through the mid-20th century, it served as a cultural anchor institution for the Sunset Park community. In its most active period, the church supported a congregation of nearly 3,000 members. Today, the building retains its architectural integrity and historic stained-glass windows. The current occupant is the Tian Fu United Methodist Church. The building's history reflects its past community role.
