Kingsway Jewish Center
historic place
The Kingsway Jewish Center, located in Brooklyn, New York, is a significant historic place in Kings County. The congregation was established in 1928, serving the Midwood, Madison, and Marine Park sections of Brooklyn. The main synagogue building, a four-story steel frame structure with a brick facade, was completed in 1951. It features an Art Deco architectural style. A notable artistic element within the synagogue is a series of 18 stained-glass windows designed by abstract expressionist artist Adolph Gottlieb, which were commissioned by the congregation and installed in 1955. These windows are considered the sole surviving intact architectural stained-glass work by Gottlieb in its original location. The center's complex expanded in the mid-1950s to include a school block, completed in 1957, and a catering hall wing, also around 1957. These additions further established its role as a comprehensive Jewish community center. Recognizing its architectural and artistic importance, the Kingsway Jewish Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. This designation acknowledges its historical role and unique artistic contributions to the community.
