Magen David Synagogue

historic place

The Magen David Synagogue is a historic place in Brooklyn, New York. Construction of this Neo-Romanesque Revival style building began in 1920. The cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1920. Architect Maurice Courland designed the synagogue. It was completed and dedicated on December 21, 1921. The synagogue served New York's flourishing Syrian-Jewish community, who had moved to Brooklyn from other areas. For more than twenty years, it was a central point for this Orthodox Jewish community. The Magen David Synagogue holds a special place as the "mother" synagogue for this group. On April 24, 2001, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated it a landmark. It was then listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This synagogue continues to be used for daily and Shabbat prayers. It represents a significant part of Brooklyn's Syrian-Jewish heritage.
