Ocean Parkway Jewish Center
historic place
The Ocean Parkway Jewish Center is a historic place in Brooklyn, Kings County. It was constructed between 1924 and 1926, designed by architects Samuel Malkind and Martyn Weinstein in a Neoclassical style. A plaque on its exterior commemorates the laying of its cornerstone by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Winkelstein on April 26, 1925. This center was formed in 1924 through the merger of two earlier congregations: the First Congregation of Kensington, established in 1907, and the West Flatbush Jewish Center. The building served as a Jewish Center, integrating spaces for worship, education, and recreation. In 1951, a two-story addition, the Talmud Torah Ocean Parkway Jewish Center, was built. The Ocean Parkway Jewish Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. It remains a distinctive architectural, cultural, and religious landmark for Brooklyn's Jewish community.
