Renaissance Apartments, Brooklyn

historic place

The Renaissance Apartments, a historic place in Brooklyn's Kings County, stands at Hancock Street and Nostrand Avenue. Built in 1892, this building was commissioned by local realtor Louis F. Seitz. Prominent Brooklyn architect Montrose W. Morris designed it. Morris conceived the Renaissance Apartments in the French Renaissance style, drawing inspiration from 16th-century chateaux. Its design incorporates circular corner towers with conical roofs and steeply sloped slate mansard roofs. The building features buff Roman brick, terra cotta, metal, and slate. Upon its completion, the Renaissance Apartments was among Brooklyn's most prestigious multi-family residences. It served as an early example of elegant apartment living, distinguishing itself from typical single-family rowhouses or tenements of the period. The Renaissance Apartments was designated a New York City Landmark in 1986 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This structure represents a notable example of turn-of-the-century apartment house design in Brooklyn.
