Shaari Zedek Synagogue
historic place
The Shaari Zedek Synagogue, a historic place in Brooklyn's Kings County, housed a congregation organized in Stuyvesant Heights in 1902. The building at 767 Putnam Avenue was constructed from 1909 to 1910. It was dedicated on September 25, 1910. Eugene Schoen designed the Neoclassical structure. This synagogue became New York City's largest Conservative synagogue. In 1924, the Shaari Zedek congregation sold the building. By 1944, St. Leonard's, an Afro-Caribbean church, acquired it. The former Shaari Zedek Synagogue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. This site reflects a chapter in Brooklyn's religious and architectural history.
