Joost Van Nuyse House

historic place

The Joost Van Nuyse House, in Flatlands, Brooklyn, New York, is a historic place. This Dutch Colonial farmhouse's original section was built in 1744. It was later enlarged between 1793 and 1806. Joost Van Nuyse, a Dutch farmer, owned 85 acres in northern Flatlands; his family arrived in New Amsterdam by 1651. The house is also known as the Ditmas Coe House, after Ditmas Coe, who rented it in 1852. In 1925, the house was moved to its current location. This 1.5-story frame house features a steeply pitched, flared roof. The Joost Van Nuyse House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 and designated a New York City Landmark in 1966. It remains a notable example of an 18th-century Dutch Colonial farmhouse in Brooklyn.
