Wilson Avenue Subway Station (Dual System BMT)

historic place

The Wilson Avenue Subway Station, located in Brooklyn's Kings County, is a historic place on the BMT Canarsie Line. It opened on July 14, 1928, as part of an extension of the Canarsie Line. This expansion was completed under the city's Dual Contracts, a period when the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation, or BMT, significantly expanded the subway system. The station's design is notable for its two tracks and side platforms situated on different levels. This unique configuration was necessary due to its location, constrained between the Most Holy Trinity Cemetery and the Long Island Rail Road's Bay Ridge Branch. The northbound platform is at street level, while the southbound platform is on a low elevated structure. The Wilson Avenue Subway Station was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on July 6, 2005. Its distinct layout reflects the engineering challenges of early 20th-century subway construction in New York City.
