Young Israel of Flatbush

historic place

Young Israel of Flatbush, located in Brooklyn's Kings County, was established as a congregation on December 6, 1921. Its first Shabbat services were held on March 3, 1922. The synagogue building, at 1012 Avenue I, was constructed between 1925 and 1929. Architect Louis Allen Abramson designed it in a Moorish Revival style. The building features polychromatic patterned brick, horseshoe arches, and slender minarets. This institution was an early and large branch of the National Council of Young Israel, supporting Orthodox Jewish practice in Brooklyn. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. In 2021, the congregation merged with Talmud Torah of Flatbush. The original building stands as a significant example of early 20th-century synagogue architecture in Brooklyn.
