US Post Office--Long Beach

historic place

The U.S. Post Office in Long Beach, New York, is a historic place in Nassau County. This building was constructed in 1936. It was designed in the Colonial Revival style by the Office of the Supervising Architect, under the direction of Louis A. Simon. The post office is a one-story, symmetrically massed building, faced with red brick. Its design includes a central five-bay wide section with a gable roof. This is flanked by single-bay end pavilions, also with gable roofs, set perpendicular to the central section. Inside the lobby, visitors can see a Treasury Section of Fine Arts mural. This mural, titled 'The Pleasures of the Bathing Beach,' was created by Jon Corbino in 1939. The U.S. Post Office--Long Beach was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 11, 1989. This designation recognizes its architectural significance and its role in the community.
