Riverside Cemetery, Long Eddy, New York
historic place
Riverside Cemetery, located in Long Eddy, Sullivan County, New York, is also known as Halsey Cemetery. It was established in 1885 when the people of Long Eddy collectively cleared land for a community burial ground. The Halsey family donated the land and a small wooden chapel. This chapel was designed to reflect the architecture of the Halsey family cottages in Long Eddy. A Bible for the chapel was donated on Thanksgiving Day in 1887. Many of the tombstones within the cemetery were crafted from local bluestone. A historical marker details these origins. Riverside Cemetery was recognized for its historical significance when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The cemetery contains approximately 550 markers through 1943.
