historic place

St. William's Catholic Church is a historic site on Long Point on Raquette Lake, in Hamilton County, New York. The church was built in 1890. It was designed in the Shingle Style by the firm of New York architect J. Cleaveland Cady. William West Durant provided the land, designs, and funds for its construction. A plaque inside the church states: 'Saint William's Roman Catholic Church, Raquette Lake erected anno domini 1890. The land designs and the funds for building were generously given by Mr. and Mrs. William West Durant.' The church is a rectangular, one-story building with a steeply pitched roof. Its main facade includes a two-story cylindrical tower with a conical roof, flanked by open porches. St. William's Catholic Church was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on January 7, 2005. The building and grounds are now maintained by Saint William's on Long Point Inc., a non-profit, non-denominational organization. This property is seasonally available and accessible by boat only. This historic church exemplifies late 19th-century Adirondack architecture and regional community development.
