CIRCLE LINE X (sightseeing vessel)

historic place

The vessel known as Circle Line X began its service in 1944 as the USS LCI(L)-758, a Landing Craft Infantry (Large) for the United States Navy. During World War II, it participated in several landings in the Pacific Theater, including the battles of Leyte, Ormoc Bay, Mindoro, and Lingayen Gulf. The vessel was decommissioned in May 1946. In 1955, Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises acquired the vessel and converted it into a tourist boat, renaming it Circle Line X. It then operated for decades, circling Manhattan as a sightseeing vessel until its retirement in 2007. In 2014, the Circle Line X was added to the National Register of Historic Places. There are plans to convert this historic vessel into a museum. The Circle Line X is significant for its dual history as a World War II landing craft and a long-serving New York City sightseeing vessel.
