Boy's High School, Brooklyn, New York

historic place

Boy's High School, located at 832 Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, is a significant historic place. Established in 1891, it was Brooklyn's first public high school, providing free secondary education for young men. The school moved to its current Romanesque Revival building in 1892. James W. Naughton, Superintendent of Buildings for the Board of Education, designed the four-story structure. Its architectural features include gables, dormers, a round corner tower, and a campanile with a pyramid roof. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the building a landmark on September 23, 1975, calling it one of the city's finest Romanesque Revival structures. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 1975, Boy's High School merged with Girls' High School, and the combined institution moved. The original building now houses other schools. This site is historically important for its foundational role in Brooklyn's public education and its architectural design.
