Burden, James A. Jr., House and Kahn, Otto H., House
historic place
In New York City, the James A. Burden House and the Otto Kahn House are significant historic places. The James A. Burden House, at 7 East 91st Street, was built from 1902 to 1905. Architects Warren and Wetmore designed this five-story Beaux-Arts mansion for James A. Burden Jr. and Florence Adele Sloane Burden. Next door, the Otto Kahn House, at 1 East 91st Street, was completed in 1918. J. Armstrong Stenhouse and C. P. H. Gilbert designed this four-story Neo-Italian Renaissance mansion for financier Otto Kahn. Its design was inspired by Rome's Palazzo della Cancelleria. Both mansions are now connected and owned by the Convent of the Sacred Heart. They became New York City landmarks in February 1974. These houses represent grand early 20th-century residential architecture in Manhattan.
