Century Building

historic place

The Century Building is located at 33 East 17th Street in New York, New York. This historic place was constructed between 1880 and 1881. Architect J. William Schickel designed the building in the Queen Anne style. This makes it a rare surviving example of a commercial building in this style within New York City. The Queen Anne style is characterized by features such as richly carved stonework, a two-story oriel window, and a gambrel roof with massive chimney stacks. Originally, the Century Building was a speculative commercial development. It became home to the Century Publishing Company from 1881 to 1915, which lent its name to the structure. The building was designated a New York City Landmark in 1986 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Since 1995, it has housed a Barnes & Noble bookstore. The Century Building stands as a significant reminder of late 19th-century commercial architecture in Manhattan.
