Chambers Street Subway Station (Dual System BMT)

historic place

The Chambers Street Subway Station, located in New York, New York, is a historic place. It was built for the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company, or BMT, as part of the city's Dual Contracts. The station opened on August 4, 1913. Construction of this section occurred between 1911 and 1913, with the station situated directly beneath the Municipal Building. Initially, Chambers Street served as a terminal for trains arriving from the Williamsburg Bridge. In May 1931, the Nassau Street subway opened, extending the line south and converting Chambers Street into a through station. This change led to the closure of some original platforms. The station retains original glass wall tiles and an original sliding metal grate. Mosaics, including one depicting King's College, were installed around 1918 and 1919. The Chambers Street Subway Station is significant for its role in the early 20th-century expansion of New York City's subway system.
