City Pier A
historic place
City Pier A, in New York, New York, was built between 1884 and 1886. George Sears Greene Jr. was its engineer. The pier first served as headquarters for the New York City Board of Dock Commissioners and the Police Department's Harbor Department. In 1919, a clock tower was added. This clock honored the 116,000 US servicemen who died in World War I, marking the first World War I memorial in the United States. From 1960 to 1992, City Pier A housed the New York City Fire Department's fireboat station. It was designated a New York City landmark in 1977 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. City Pier A is significant as Manhattan's oldest remaining pier.
