Colony Arcade Building
historic place
The Colony Arcade Building, located at 63-67 West 38th Street in New York, New York, is a historic place completed in 1913. Designed by architect Frederick Zobel, its facade features brick and terra cotta, embellished with Gothic arches, heraldic shields, and quatrefoils. This building emerged during a period when the surrounding block was transitioning from residential brownstones to commercial loft and store buildings. Initially, the Colony Arcade Building was largely occupied by businesses in the millinery trade, housing hat manufacturers. Over time, its tenants diversified, including a silk waist manufacturer and, by 1928, the pioneering Radiovision Corporation. In 1914, the large ground floor space was leased for a restaurant and tearoom. The Colony Arcade Building reflects the northward movement of trade in Manhattan and the growing commercial importance of this section of 38th Street. It stands as a notable example of early 20th-century commercial architecture in the city.
