Eighth Regiment Armory
historic place
In New York, New York, in the Bronx, stands the Eighth Regiment Armory. This historic place, also known as the Kingsbridge Armory, was built between 1912 and 1917. Designed by the firm of Pilcher and Tachau, its Romanesque architectural style gives it the appearance of a medieval fortress. The armory was constructed to house the New York National Guard's Eighth Coast Defense Command. This regiment, known as the "Washington Greys," traces its history to 1786. Reputedly the largest armory in the world, it spans five acres. Designated a New York City Landmark in 1974 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, the Eighth Regiment Armory is a significant example of military architecture in the Bronx.
