First Battery Armory
historic place
The First Battery Armory, a historic place in New York, New York, is located at 56 West 66th Street. Construction of this building took place between 1901 and 1904. Architects Arthur J. Horgan and Vincent J. Slattery designed the armory. Its design incorporates multiple revival architectural styles, featuring medieval-inspired elements such as turrets and crenelations. Initially, the armory served the First Battery, a mounted field artillery unit of the New York National Guard. Over time, its use changed; it housed the 102nd Medical Regiment until 1976. Later, it was converted into a television studio. Today, the building contains ESPN offices. Architectural details on the building include the letters "N.G.S.N.Y." and the First Battery's insignia, featuring "1901" and the Latin motto "Semper Paratus," meaning "always ready." The First Battery Armory is recognized as a New York City designated landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands as one of the few remaining examples of its building type in New York City.
