House at 20 West 16th St.

historic place

Welcome to 20 West 16th Street, a historic place in New York, New York. This house was constructed between 1844 and 1845. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Isaac Greene Pearson. This particular style makes it one of Manhattan's few remaining intact Gothic Revival houses from that era. The house was originally part of a group of five townhouses built in the same style. For about fifty years, the family of artist Emma Stebbins owned this residence. The house is the only remaining building directly associated with Stebbins, an important detail for understanding her legacy. In the 1960s, politician Bella Abzug also lived here. The House at 20 West 16th Street was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 30, 2007. Its continued existence provides a tangible link to mid-19th century architecture and significant New Yorkers.
