House at 51 Market St.
historic place
The House at 51 Market Street in New York, New York, was constructed between 1824 and 1825. This building is a notable example of the Late Federal style of architecture. It was originally a two-story gambrelled house, built for William Clark, a grocer. At the time, the Lower East Side was an affluent residential neighborhood. The house was initially numbered 43 Market Street, later renumbered to 51 in 1850. Its architectural details include paneled lintels above the windows, enriched with panels and rosettes. The original entrance features a molded elliptical stone arch, an eight-paneled door, fluted Ionic columns, and leaded glass sidelights and a fanlight. In October 1870, the house was enlarged to four floors with a rear extension. In 1965, the house was designated a New York City landmark. It was then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The 51 Market Street House retains significant architectural details of its period, making it an important example of early 19th-century domestic architecture in the city.
