Municipal Ferry Pier
historic place
The Municipal Ferry Pier, also known as the Battery Maritime Building, stands in New York County. This historic place was constructed between 1906 and 1909. The architectural firm of Walker and Morris designed it. It originally served ferries connecting Manhattan with 39th Street in South Brooklyn. The city took over these ferry operations in 1906. The building showcases Beaux-Arts architecture, characterized by its distinctive steel arches. Ferry service to South Brooklyn ended in 1938. Since 1956, the pier has facilitated ferry travel to Governors Island. Recognized for its historical significance, the Municipal Ferry Pier became a New York City Landmark in 1967. It was then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This structure provides insight into New York City's early 20th-century maritime transportation.
