historic place
This location at 170 West 130th Street in New York, New York, served as the National Headquarters for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. In the summer of 1963, this Harlem building became the central planning site for the historic demonstration. Veteran activist Bayard Rustin established the headquarters here, organizing the event with a staff of 200 volunteers in just two months. On August 28, 1963, the March on Washington brought over a quarter million people to the nation's capital. This event was the largest civil rights demonstration of its time. The march helped spur the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The building was recognized for its historical significance and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. This site is important for its role in organizing a pivotal moment in the American Civil Rights Movement.
