St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church, Brooklyn

historic place

St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church, located in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, has a history rooted in the mid-19th century. The congregation was founded as St. Luke's Protestant Episcopal Church in 1842. This followed the financial difficulties of an earlier church, Trinity Church, which occupied the same building constructed in 1835. The church's current building, at 520 Clinton Avenue, was constructed between 1888 and 1891. Designed by John Welch, it features the Romanesque Revival style. This structure is recognized as one of Brooklyn's grandest 19th-century ecclesiastical buildings. In 1981, it was designated a New York City Landmark, and in 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The congregation merged with St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in 1943, becoming the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew. This site reflects Brooklyn's growth and architectural development during the 19th century.
