Sutton Place Historic District

historic place

The Sutton Place Historic District is located on Manhattan's East Side in New York City. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The district is named for Effingham B. Sutton, who built brownstones between 57th and 58th Streets starting in 1875. This area was initially industrial. Around 1920, wealthy socialites like Anne Harriman Vanderbilt and Anne Morgan built townhouses here, transforming Sutton Place into a fashionable residential enclave overlooking the East River. Grand co-operative apartment buildings followed. The district encompasses original townhouse rows on Sutton Place and Sutton Square, connected by a communal garden. Sutton Place Historic District is significant for its distinctive architecture and its evolution as an exclusive residential community.
