The Wilbraham

historic place

The Wilbraham is a historic apartment building located in New York City's Midtown South neighborhood. Constructed between 1888 and 1890, it was designed by architects David and John Jardine in the Romanesque Revival style. Initially, The Wilbraham served as a bachelor apartment hotel, providing residences for single professional men. These apartments included a bedroom, parlor, and bathroom, but notably lacked a kitchen. Residents instead dined in a communal room located on the eighth floor. This housing type gained popularity in late 19th-century New York City due to a rise in unmarried men. In the mid-1930s, the building underwent renovations, and kitchens were added to the apartments. The Wilbraham was designated a New York City Landmark in 2004 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018. It remains a significant example of a bachelor apartment hotel, reflecting a distinct period in the city's residential history.
