historic place
The US Post Office—Inwood Station is a historic place in New York, New York, located at 90 Vermilyea Avenue, at the corner of West 204th Street, in Manhattan's Inwood neighborhood. This building was erected between 1935 and 1937. Consulting architect Carroll H. Pratt designed the station for the Office of the Supervising Architect of the United States Department of the Treasury. The Inwood Station Post Office is an example of Colonial Revival architecture. It is a one-story brick building, characterized by a three-bay-wide projecting entrance pavilion. Architectural details include a limestone cornice, a frieze, and a brick parapet. The post office officially opened on June 29, 1937. Its construction was part of the federal public works initiatives during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The US Post Office—Inwood Station was recognized for its historical significance and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This site provides a tangible link to federal building programs of that period.
