Bement--Billings House
historic place
The Bement--Billings House is a historic place in Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York, located on New York State Route 38. Revolutionary War veteran Asa Bement, Jr., an early settler and blacksmith, built the initial one-room cabin around 1796. Throughout the 19th century, the house expanded into a 15-room structure, incorporating Federal and Greek Revival architectural styles. A Federal-style parlor was added in the 1820s. In 1843, Asa's son, William, further expanded the house, adding a second story and new rooms in the Greek Revival style. The Bement family significantly contributed to Tioga County's early history. The Billings family later owned the property. In 1977, Mrs. Myrtie Louise Billings Hills deeded the house to the Newark Valley Historical Society. It now operates as the Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum, a living history museum. The Bement--Billings House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on February 19, 1990. A historical marker indicates its construction around 1796 by Asa Bement.
