Newark Valley Municipal Building and Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library
historic place
In Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York, stand the Newark Valley Municipal Building and the Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library. The Municipal Building was erected in 1887, initially as the Union Free School and Academy. A rear wing was added in 1904. The building was repurposed for municipal use in 1931. The Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library, completed in 1908, is adjacent. Its construction was funded by the estate of LeRoy Tappan, who passed away in 1905. Mr. Tappan's will provided funds and requested his artifact collection be displayed within the library. This one-story brick building features a tile roof and a three-stage tower. Both buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, marking their historical importance.
