Silk Street Bridge
historic place
The Silk Street Bridge, located in Newark Valley, Tioga County, New York, is a notable historic structure. This metal lenticular pony truss bridge was constructed in 1888. It was built by the Berlin Iron Bridge Company of East Berlin, Connecticut. The bridge spans the East Branch of Owego Creek. The lenticular truss design is recognized for its distinctive, lens-like shape. This particular design was patented by the Corrugated Metal Company, which was also known as the Berlin Iron Bridge Company. Today, lenticular truss bridges are considered an extremely rare and important type of metal truss bridge, making the Silk Street Bridge nationally significant. The bridge was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. Currently, the Silk Street Bridge is closed to traffic and remains abandoned. Its engineering and rarity contribute to its historical importance.
